7/3 Shore's TNA Impact Wrestling live coverage: Angelina Love vs. Gail Kim for the TNA Knockouts Championship, Bobby Lashley vs. Eric Young for the TNA World Championship
2014-07-03 20:00:50

By Chris Shore

TNA Impact Wrestling on Spike TV
Taped in Bethlehem, Penn.

[Q1] A video recapped MVP getting removed from power and Kurt Angle being placed in power… Kurt Angle made his ring entrance as Mike Tenay and Taz checked in on commentary. Angle said we celebrate America's independence and tonight we celebrate TNA's freedom. He called out Earl Hebner and reinstated him.

Shore's Slant: Upon further evaluation…

Angle pulled out a cheat sheet and announced all the matches for the evening. Angle told everyone to pop a cold one and enjoy some entertainment on him. Samoa Joe made his ring entrance and mocked Angle for being fair. He said for all of Angle's proclamations, Angle was no different than the people before him. Joe said Angle loved the TNA title more than anything and he wanted to know when Angle was going to book himself in a title match.

Angle said he wasn't going to have this conversation. He said he had dealt with the same garbage as Joe had all the years. Joe said they didn't follow the same path. He said Angle was brought to TNA while he had to fight his way into the company. Angle said Joe had opportunities but would often come in half-ass. Angle said he never worked half-ass.

Joe started yelling and said while Angle was riding around in jets and limos, Joe was rebuilding professional wrestling for $40 a night. He got in Joe's face and said he was Samoa Joe, they called him the Samoan Submission Machine, and he was professional wrestling. Angle said that was the Joe he wanted to see. Joe said Angle should be careful what he wished for and left…

Shore's Slant: Why do they keep using that phrase? "Be careful what you wish for." At least it made sense this time. Pretty pedestrian opening segment. Angle pulling the cheat sheet stood out for all the wrong reasons, and Joe has been misused so much it's hard to buy into anything he says.

Backstage, MVP saw Bobby Roode and asked him if he wanted to fight. Roode closed on him and Kenny King came flying in to sneak attack. They beat Roode down and MVP choked him with a crutch…

[Q2][C] Backstage, Angle asked Roode what happened. Roode said he got jumped and Angle apologized. Roode said Angle didn't owe him anything. Roode thanked him for reinstating him. Angle said he didn't like Bobby but he respected him. Roode said he wanted a match with MVP. They left to find MVP…

1. The Wolves vs. Knux and the Freak vs. Jessie Godderz and DJ Z for the TNA Tag Team Championships. The stilt walkers were wearing Uncle Sam outfits and Rebel wore a flag bikini top. Eddie took the heat and then Davey got the hot tag to clear the ring. They hit the Alarm Clock for the win…

The Wolves retained the TNA Tag Team Championship at 4:12.

Backstage, Bobby Roode screamed at King and MVP while Angle tried to calm him down. Angle tried to book MVP vs. Roode but MVP said he had a doctor's note. King said they already beat his ass anyway so Angle booked King vs. Roode in a street fight for next…[C]

Shore's Slant: Show off match for the Wolves and more yelling from Roode. Not a lot to complain about but not a lot to really hook you either. I know I've been critical of there being too little wrestling on the shows, but with all of these matches, I fear none of them get proper attention. Hopefully not.

[Q3] Roode made his ring entrance and said thanks to Angle he was reinstated and he wasn't wasting any time. He called out King, who came out MVP to the stage. King asked if Roode really wanted to fight the king. He told MVP they should go break Roode's neck. They started for the ring, but Angle came out and sent MVP to the back. Roode ran down and attacked King from behind.

They battled around the arena and up to the raised area. Roode "slammed" King off the second area to the lower area, but King held the rail and really only fell about two feet. Roode dropped down and they brawled through the crowd. Roode dumped a charging King over the barricade to the ringside area. Roode got a chair and held it perfectly for King to kick it into his face. King rolled Roode in the ring to officially start the match…

2. Bobby Roode vs. Kenny King in a street fight. King hit a few strikes and went for the chair. He laid it in the ring and lifted Roode. Roode slipped out and lifted King. He held him for several seconds and then hit the Roode Bomb on the chair for the win…

Bobby Roode defeated Kenny King at 1:44.

Backstage, Ethan Carter cut a promo asking how many times he had to beat Ray and how many tables did he have to put Ray through for him to learn he would never put Dixie or EC3 through a table. He said he would beat Ray because he was the Hardcore American Icon… Brittany was shown walking backstage…[C]

Shore's Slant: Fun brawl that ended in a poorly timed finish. King was fully in control when he was lifted but he couldn't escape? Come on. It didn't kill the segment, but it was pretty bad.

Backstage, Roode said Angle gave him a fight, which was exactly what he needed to get his head back in the game. He said King was the first, MVP was next, and eventually it would be Bobby Lashley because he was destined to be TNA Champion again…

[Q4] Austin Aries walked up on Angle and after some back and forth putting each other over, Aries said he never got his rematch with Sanada for the X Division title. Angle mentioned Option C and Aries said he did it once. Angle gave him his rematch for next week and said they should have a match sometime to find out who is the greatest wrestler. Aries said he hoped it happened and so did the fans…

Brittany was in the ring and called out Madison Rayne. Madison came to the ring and said if they had to fight to settle this she would. Brittany told her no, she want to apologize because Madison was right. She said the Knockouts division was hard to navigate and she knows now Madison was just trying to help. Madison said if she meant that she would be there for her because she wanted to see her succeed.

They hugged and Brittany held up Madison's hand. She held onto it and said the most important lesson she learned was not to meet your heroes. She clotheslined Madison and the crowd popped. Brittany added that your heroes always disappoint you and kicked Madison. She threw her into the ring post and then hit a reverse DDT on the floor…

In a stairwell, Bully Ray cut a promo and swore to god he would put Dixie Carter through a table but EC3 would go first next…[C]

Shore's Slant: Almost an entire of quarter of talking, and most of it a waste of time. Roode's promo was just more yelling. Aries and Angle could have been done in a third of the time. Brittany and Madison were pretty good, however. The crowd surprised me by popping for Madison getting beat up. Of course the segment started slow and finished hot so it could have just been a reaction to that. It will be interesting to see how Brittany is treated in NY over the next few weeks considering those shows were taped before these were shown.

Backstage, MVP stood with Lashley. He put over Lashley's size and said whatever happened to EY tonight was Angle's fault because he made the match…

[Q5] 3. Ethan Carter III vs. Bully Ray in a tables match. Ray started fast and dumped Carter to the floor. He slammed EC3 on the stairs several times and rolled him into the ring where he missed a Stinger splash. He came right back with the flip, flop, and fly and counted down with the crowd to get a table. He set one up in the ring, but EC3 hit a flying clothesline.

Carter pinned Bully in the corner and climbed up for punches. Ray hooked for a powerbomb and walked out of the corner. Rockstar Spud ran out and hit a low blow to stop him. They attacked Ray and Rhino's music hit. He ran to the ring and acted like he was going to gore Spud, but he turned around and gored Ray instead. The crowd chanted "You sold out," and EC3 nodded to them. Carter hit a chokeslam through the table for the win…

Ethan Carter III defeated Bully Ray at 6:47.

Backstage, Roode talked up EY. EY put over Lashley and acted like he was already beaten. He said the facts were he was 0-3 against Lashley. Roode asked him what the facts were about EY and EY put himself over. Roode said he would be in EY's corner tonight and walked off…

Shore's Slant: Rhino? Really? OK. Tame TV tables match with a lackluster ending. I know they are stretching Dixie going through a tables far as they can, but I'm ready to get it over with now. And let me get this straight, the super confident EY who was champion now doubts himself because he lost the title to Lashley when the deck was completely stacked against him? Terrible logic.

A video recapped Rhino's attack. Backstage, Rhino said he owed no one nothing and sometimes he does things just because he wants to. They walked off with Spud yelling for the camera to be turned off…

A video recapped the Sam Shaw story. Shaw and Gunner stood backstage from "earlier today." Gunner asked him how it felt to be back and Shaw said it was weird. Gunner said they just had to work on rebuilding trust and that meant he needed to apologize to you know who. They walked off and bumped into Anderson. Anderson asked why he should give Shaw a second chance and Gunner gave a rambling confusing answer and compared Shaw to his buddy who lost his leg in war. Anderson backed down and said they should go see Christie.

All three men walked around the corner and went into Christie's locker room. She asked what Shaw was doing there and Anderson said to trust him and Gunner. Shaw apologized and walked off. Gunner looked at them like, "See" and went after Shaw. Christie didn't seem convinced and Anderson said he didn't know…

The Beautiful people molested Stiffler in their locker room and asked him who the ref was for the title match tonight and he said him. He said he demanded it from Hebner. They told him confidence was sexy, as was winning. They asked him if he wanted to be with winners and he said yes. They slapped him on the ass and sent him out of the room…[C]

Shore's Slant: Gunner's explanation for trusting Shaw was horrible, but at least we aren't in the loony bin any more. I am interested to see how all of this plays out. The Stiffler stuff is just terrible. I hope Angle switches refs.

Angle grabbed Stiffler and said every time he refs a Beautiful People match they make him look like a rookie so Baby Hebner was reffing this match… Knux spoke to the Menagerie and told them "he" was demanding his money and they needed to wrestle and win money. The Freak posed and Crazy Steve was... well, crazy. He and Rebel walked off and Knux said they had a lot of work to do…

[Q7] 4. Angelina Love (w/Velvet Sky) vs. Gail Kim for the TNA Knockouts Championship. Velvet tried to talk up Hebner but he said he was calling it down the middle. Love went to the floor and Kim followed. Velvet shoved Kim into the ring post and continued to attack her when the ref wasn't looking. Kim finally dragged Velvet to the apron and Velvet hit a hangman. The ref saw it and overacted as he ejected Velvet.

In the ring, Kim started her comeback and went to the top rope. Angelina hit the Botox Injection and Kim spilled to the floor. The ref started to count her out, but Angelina said she wanted to pin Kim. She rolled to the floor and rolled Kim back in the ring. She went for the Botox Injection again, but Kim blocked it and hit Eat Defeat to win the title…

Gail Kim won the TNA Knockouts Championship at 6:02.

A video recapped how Lashley won the title. A video showed he and EY walking backstage…[C]

Shore's Slant: I have no idea why they would change the title here. The Beautiful People were just starting to get their legs underneath them after a weak start and they pull the title off? Why? There was no clamoring for that. What a bizarre decision. The match was fine. They told a decent story with Velvet's interference, but Baby Hebner should get his ass chewed for that ejection. I would have taken that from Stifler since he's been in the storyline, but not Hebner here. Terrible.

IQG asked Angle about his first night on the job. Angle said it’s been good and they had great things coming. IQG asked for a hint and Angle said every title would be up for grabs next week except the World title because he would have a battle royal to determine the number one contender…

[Q8] Ring introductions occurred for the main event. Bobby Roode joined them before the bell rang…[C]

5. Bobby Lashley (w/MVP) vs. Eric Young (w/Bobby Roode) for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. In the first 30 seconds, both MVP and Roode grabbed a leg of someone in the ring. Earl Hebner tossed them both from ringside. EY hit an elbow and went to the floor to high-five the fans. He coaxed Lashley to the floor so he could attack when Lashley chased him back to the ring. EY went to the top rope, but Lashley knocked him to the floor. EY sold his leg being hurt.

Lashley worked the leg over on the apron and ring post. He hooked a single leg crab and then hit a leg DDT for two. EY tried to fight back and hit a missile drop kick. He went to the top rope and hit an ugly top rope elbow for two. He setup for the piledriver but sold his leg hurting too much. Lashley suddenly exploded with a Dominator and followed with a sick spear for the win…

Bobby Lashley retained the TNA World Championship at 6:55.

Shore's Slant: Good match to close the show and the heel won clean. That's three times in two weeks or something like that. How very exciting! Perhaps things are making a turn for the better in TNA. Impact itself was more flat than bad, though I don't understand some of the moves. Gail Kim winning doesn't serve an obvious purpose, and I can't say I'm excited about Rhino's return, but it wasn't a bad episode of Impact at all. Thanks for watching along tonight and everyone have a happy, and safe, 4th of July.
