7/25 Shore's WWE Smackdown live coverage: Roman Reigns vs. Alberto Del Rio, Paige vs. Naomi, Bray Wyatt vs. R-Truth
By Chris Shore
WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on July 22 in Orlando, Fl.
[Q1] A video recapped the return of Brock Lesnar… The opening video aired, followed by the Usos full entrance,. Michael Cole and JBL checked in on commentary. Rybaxel was out next…
1. The Usos vs. Rybaxel. Cole and JBL setup that of Rybaxel wins tonight they should get a title shot. The fight spilled to the floor quickly with Ryback in control…[C]
Rybaxel remained in control as the announce team ran through the teams in the division. Jimmy hit an enziguri on Ryback to get the hot tag to Jey. Axel came in and took the comeback. He hit a butt splash and covered, but Ryback broke it up. Jey dumped Ryback and hit a dive. Axel kicked Jey to the floor when he tried to return. Jimmy slid over next to Jey and Axel put Jimmy in the ring instead. Jimmy hooked a small package for the win…
The Usos defeated Rybaxel at 9:58.
[Q2] The announce team hyped an update on Stephanie McMahon and the main event… Miz signed an autograph for a kid backstage as hype for Miz TV after the break…[C]
Shore's Slant: F***ing twin magic? Are you kidding me? Way to kill a good match with a stupid ending WWE. Jeez.
Miz made his entrance to boos, but it sure looked sweetened to me. He said he was there to give everyone his acceptance speech after winning the Intercontinental Championship. He pointed to ringside and his mom and dad were there. He went and asked his mom if she was proud of him and she said yes. She said it was awesome he was her son. The good news is Dolph Ziggler isn’t her favorite wrestler anymore. The bad news is Roman Reigns is. Miz came back to the ring and thanked Maryse, his dogs and cats, his fans, and his face, "the moneymaker."
Bo Dallas made his ring entrance and ran around the ring. He got in the ring and took a mic. He told Miz even though Miz didn’t mention him by name, he knew he won because he Bo-lieved. Miz said he liked him and their people should get in touch.
Dolph Ziggler made his entrance and said Miz should act like he had won a title before. He said Miz laid on the ground until the last minute instead of doing any work like Ziggler did when he eliminated Sheamus. He said they were the same, completely full of crap. Bo told Ziggler he could be like them if he just Bo-lieved. Ziggler shoved him and went to hit Miz. Miz bailed and Dallas attacked Ziggler from behind. He dumped him to the floor and Miz nodded at Bo…
Shore's Slant: What the hell was that? Did WWE hire the TNA promo team? Completely meaningless promo without a real payoff. The live crowd was confused when this just ended too. Terrible.
[Q3][C] 2. Bo Dallas vs. Dolph Ziggler. The match was booked during the commercial. Miz joined commentary. Cole asked Miz if the interview with Miz's mom was scripted. Ziggler went to the floor and took a swipe at Miz. Miz ducked, but distracted Ziggler back in the ring to allow Bo to roll him up and grab the types for the win…
Bo Dallas defeated Dolph Ziggler in 3:15.
Post-match, Bo ran around the ring and Ziggler attacked him. Miz attacked Ziggler from behind and shoved him into the ring post…
Renee Young interviewed Roman Reigns. She asked him about stopping Randy Orton on Monday. Reigns said of course Orton was crying about it because that's what Orton did, cry to his daddy Triple H. He said Hunter always has plans, but when you get hit with his fist, all the plans go out the window. She asked him about his match tonight with Alberto Del Rio and Reigns said he had the punch. Believe that…[C]
Shore's Slant: This Smackdown is falling apart at the seams. Why in the blue hell would Cole ask if an interview was scripted on a wrestling show? It's all scripted, so why even bring it up? All it does is break that suspension of disbelief. Booking the match between Ziggler and Dallas gave the last segment so value at least, but the cut from the attack and return to the match just left things up in the air during a commercial for no reason.
Dean Ambrose made his ring entrance. Cesaro was out next…
[Q4] 3. Dean Ambrose vs. Cesaro in a no disqualification match. Ambrose beat Cesaro down in the corner and went to the floor to get chairs. Cesaro came to the floor and got a kendo stick. He missed Ambrose and hit the ring post. Ambrose clotheslined Cesaro into the timekeeper's area and then hit him with the ring bell. Ambrose grabbed a kendo stick and jumped off the announce table, but Cesaro hit him with a kendo stick to the gut…[C]
Cesaro choked Ambrose with a kendo stick as a video showed him slamming Ambrose on a chair during the break. Ambrose bit fingers to break the choke. Cesaro setup two chairs facing each other and slammed Ambrose on the chairs. They didn't split apart like they normally do. Ouch.
Cesaro shoved Ambrose into the ropes and Ambrose did his pendulum into a clothesline gimmick to start his comeback. He hit Cesaro with several kendo shots and setup the chairs like Cesaro did. Then he changed his mind and placed them back to back. They traded suplex reversals, but Ambrose finally hit it on Cesaro for two. One of the chairs was destroyed.
Ambrose hit a chair elbow drop from the second rope for two. Cesaro shoved Ambrose into the ring post and tried to hit a chair against his head. Ambrose moved and Cesaro dropped the chair. Ambrose dove on him on the floor and then tossed a dozen chairs in the ring. He rolled Cesaro in the ring, but Seth Rollins ran out and attacked Ambrose. Ambrose fought him off and clotheslined Rollins into the timekeeper's area.
Ambrose went back to the ring, but Cesaro caught him on the top rope. He knocked Ambrose down to the apron and then did the deadlift superplex onto the giant pile of chairs for a great near-fall. Cesaro sold frustration and grabbed Ambrose. Ambrose pulled him down into a small package for the win…
Dean Ambrose defeated Cesaro at 14:05.
[Q5] Rollins attacked Ambrose right after the bell. Cesaro jumped in as well and hit the neutralizer. Rollins picked up Ambrose's head and asked when he would ever learn. He hit a curb stomp and left Ambrose out in the ring…
A video package recapped the feud between Paige and AJ Lee. Paige was shown skipping backstage…[C]
Shore's Slant: Well, that's how you make up for a shitty first half of the show. Excellent match between Cesaro and Ambrose. The two double chair spots and superplex on the chairs looked absolutely brutal. I wish we could have gone without the Rollins run-in. The post-match beat down is fine, but I wish they would have kept him out of the match. It's not a big, more a personal preference. Be sure to catch this match.
Naomi made her ring entrance in her terrible checkered flag gear. A video recapped her loss to Cameron at Battleground. Paige made her skipping ring entrance and took a mic. She said she and AJ were still friends. She said she liked AJ and she liked Naomi too…
4. Naomi vs. Paige. Paige offered a handshake. Cameron's music hit and she came to the ramp. Naomi turned to look and Paige hit her from behind. She hit the Ram-Paige and hooked the PTO for the win…
Paige defeated Naomi at 0:35.
[Q6] Post-match, Paige skipped away and Cameron came to the ring. She roughed up Naomi and put on lipstick before leaving… Goldust and Stardust had their strangest promo yet that had Stardust with his head sticking through a table after Goldust played with a plasma ball…[C]
Shore's Slant: Well, the good was fun while it lasted. The Divas stuff wasn't bad, but uninspiring. Paige's promo didn't really do anything, and no one buys into Cameron as a legit in-ring threat. I'm not sure what can be said about the Dust brothers at this point.
R-Truth finished his entrance. The Wyatt Family made their customized entrance…
5. Bray Wyatt vs. R-Truth. Truth got spooked by Wyatt's spider walk. Wyatt hit Sister Abigail for the win…
Bray Wyatt squashed R-Truth at 2:05.
Post-match, Bray took a mic and said Truth was there for Jericho when he needed him, but Jericho wasn't there for Truth. He said Jericho was no savior, but he was. He dropped to his knees and screamed for Jericho to save them…
Shore's Slant: Aren't we past enhancement matches for Bray at this point?
[Q7][C] A video recapped Stephanie McMahon's arrest Monday night. Cole gave the update that Hunter bailed her out at 4:00 that next morning and that Steph wouldn't be commenting on it "to the press." Cole hyped her return to Raw on Monday…[C]
Cole setup a recap of Brock Lesnar's return, cut in with video of Lesnar defeating Undertaker. They hyped John Cena responding on Monday… Reigns and Del Rio made their entrances…
[Q8] 6. Roman Reigns vs. Alberto Del Rio. The match barely got started before the commercial break…[C] Cole and Reigns hyped "great action" on the app during the break. Del Rio shoved Reigns into the post and worked over the arm. He slammed the arm on the stairs and rolled Reigns back in the ring. He hit the step-up enziguri for two.
Del Rio hooked the arm over the rope. Reigns powered Del Rio back into the ring and then knocked him to the floor. Reigns went on a flurry of offense. He dropped Del Rio in the ropes and went for the running kick but Del Rio moved. He recovered and dropped Del Rio against the post and hit the running kick against the post. He followed with the Superman punch and the spear for the win…
Roman Reigns defeated Alberto Del Rio at 12:27.
Shore's Slant: Pretty good match. That's not surprising considering Del Rio's involvement. Say what you want about the guy, but he can work and has carried many people to good matches. Not that he had to carry Reigns here per se, but I'm still not sold on Roman Reigns in-ring work yet. He has a spectacular look, great charisma, and his promos are good enough and getting better. Is he good enough in the ring though? I'm not calling him a bust, or even saying WWE is wrong about him. I'm just not convinced yet.
This was a poor episode of Smackdown, on the whole. The No DQ match was great, and Reigns vs. Del Rio was good. From there, the show wobbled between the banal and the bad. I'll have more tomorrow on the Hit List and All Access Smackdown audio review. Thanks for watching along tonight.
