7/22 Powell's WWE Main Event Live review: Rusev vs. Jack Swagger in a Battleground rematch
2014-07-22 19:00:30

By Jason Powell

WWE Main Event Live on WWE Network
Orlando, Florida at the Amway Center

The Main Event opening played... Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton introduced the show from ringside and hyped details on Stephanie McMahon's arrest. They also announced Rusev vs. Jack Swagger in a rematch from SummerSlam as the featured match. There was no mention of Sheamus, who was advertised for a match against Rusev...

Powell's POV: They are just giving away Rusev vs. Swagger on Main Event without any advertising? Wow, that's an odd choice.

Seth Rollins made his entrance as footage was shown of his Battleground brawling with Dean Ambrose...

1. Seth Rollins vs. Fandango. There were loud "you sold out" chants directed at Rollins to start the match. Rollins hit the Curb Stomp and scored the clean pin...

Seth Rollins beat Fandango in 3:15.

Powell's POV: Bo Dallas vs. Damien Sandow in a battle of heels on Raw, and now Rollins vs. Fandango in a battle of heels on Main Event. If nothing else, the crowd's "you sold out" chants are a sign that Rollins is clicking as a heel. After all, the crowd easily could have cheered for him in this match since he's positioned as a bigger star than Fandango. They didn't cheer Fandango either, but the fans seemed to be into the match and there were some who counted along with the referee's three count.

A video recap aired of Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman from Monday's Raw... The Uso Brothers were shown backstage and Phillips noted that Jey Uso was in singles action after the break... [C]

2. Jey Uso (w/Jimmy Uso) vs. Ryback (w/Curtis Axel). Ryback and Axel wore their matching hats. There was a brief Goldberg chant directed at Ryback. Jey danced after performing a move and Ryback shot him a great look of disdain in response. Uso scored a couple of near falls. In the end, Axel caused a distraction and Ryback hit the Meathook Clothesline and got the win...

Ryback pinned Jey Uso in 4:45.

Powell's POV: There's finally attire worse than the matching red hats that Rybaxel wear. Congrats to Jey Uso for wearing a bandana around his neck throughout the match. It's actually not a bad pre-match look, but it looks ridiculous for the guy to wear during an actual match. Rybaxel won a match on Raw and now got the win here. Are they really trying to set them up as tag challengers at SummerSlam?

The broadcast team hyped Rusev vs. Swagger... Backstage, Renee Young interviewed Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil. Slater said they were a tag team named Slater Gator. Titus didn't like the name or that Slater labeled them a team. He told him to shut up and follow his lead... [C]

Roman Reigns vs. Alberto Del Rio was announced for Friday's Smackdown...

3. Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil vs. Big E and Kofi Kingston (w/Xavier Woods). E and Kingston entered to E's entrance music. Woods wore the same Brother Love-esque suit he wore on Raw. Slater tagged himself into the match and put the boots Kingston. Later, Big E held Slater and Kingston came off the top rope with a double stomp. E stacked up Titus and Slater and pinned them both...

Big E and Kofi Kingston beat Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil in 3:25.

Powell's POV: E and especially Kingston were more aggressive. The live crowd was still responsive to them, as they really didn't have any reason to root for or against either team. I'm intrigued by the Kingston and E duo with Woods in their corner.

Footage aired of the finish to the Rusev vs. Jack Swagger match that took place at Battleground...

Backstage, Renee Young interviewed Zeb Colter and "The Big Hoss" Jack Swagger. Colter said "the only thing Russia ever invented that was worth a crap was vodka." Colter said you should never underestimate the capability of a real American. Colter closed with the We The People line, which the live crowd said along with him... [C]

Backstage, Young interviewed Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil. Titus said he knew teaming with Slater was a bad idea even before they went out there. He said it was one night only and called Slater and albatross. Once Titus walked off, Slater said Slater Gator is something special...

The broadcast team set up the Raw Rebound, which recapped the Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella angle from Raw... The broadcast team said Stephanie was bailed out of jail at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning... Rusev and Lana made their entrance... [C]

Lana cut a promo about Americans not backing up their words. She showed a photo of the a white flag she said the Americans posted on top of a Russian base. Vladimir Putin's image was shown and she praised him again...

4. Rusev (w/Lana) vs. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter). Both wrestlers carried their respective flags to the ring. The broadcast team played up the possibility of Rusev's ankle being injured after being locked in the Patriot Lock on Sunday. Swagger dumped Rusev to the floor, and Rusev limped as the crowd chanted USA heading into the break. [C]

Rusev took control the offense and pace slowed down as he worked over Swagger's arm and neck. Rusev yelled at the crowd. Swagger came back with a nice slam. He went for a Swagger Bomb. Rusev put his foot up. Swagger landed on his feet and applied the Patriot Lock. Rusev reached the ropes to break the hold, then rolled to ringside. Swagger followed to ringside where Rusev struck Swagger with the Russian flag for the DQ finish.

With Swagger in the ring, Rusev entered the ring and was going to attack him with his flag, but Colter stopped him. Swagger cleared Rusev from the ring and held up the American flag while Lana and Rusev seethed at ringside to close the show...

Jack Swagger defeated Rusev by DQ in 8:35.

Powell's POV: A slow main event, but it's encouraging to see the live crowd was into both characters. I remain surprised that they gave this match away without any advertising. It wasn't the biggest match at Battleground, but they did a nice job of setting it up and it felt like a showdown match going in. Why not make a big fuss on Raw over this rematch with the hope of selling a few network subscriptions? Overall, a good episode of Main Event, as the main event felt big time for the Tuesday night show, and it was a cool to see the Kingston, E, and Woods followup. Stick around for WWE Smackdown spoiler coverage on the main page.
