7/11 Shore's WWE Smackdown live coverage: AJ Lee vs. Cameron, Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton, Roman Reigns vs. Rusev
2014-07-11 20:00:16

By Chris Shore

WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on July 8 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

[Q1] A video recapped the John Cena vs. Seth Rollins match and post-match antics from Raw… The show opened cold with Rusev's music. He and Lana made their ring entrance as Michael Cole and JBL checked in on commentary. She said Canada was like the US in that they did not deserve to be anywhere near Rusev or Vladimir Putin. She started to say Rusev would crush Roman Reigns, but his ring entrance cut her off.

Reigns got a chant and let it marinate. He said he was going to get to the point. He said it wasn't Rusev's ring, it was his. He asked Rusev if he really thought he could beat him and laughed. Reigns continued to run him down and Rusev got chesty. Reigns said he had a hair trigger too and he would put his fist across Rusev's face, "boy." Lana told him to be careful.

Reigns said if a ref would come out he would kick Rusev's "Putin kissing ass, boy." He threw the mic and a ref ran out. The ref told Lana to get out so they could fight. Lana said, "Not on his terms," and called off Rusev. They left the ring and Reigns continued to jaw at Rusev… AJ Lee was shown backstage…

Shore's Slant: Not a good promo from Reigns. His deliver is pretty good, but the content needs work. The "boy" at the end of threats is so cliché for the babyface badass.

[Q2] A video recapped the Divas match from Monday. AJ made her entrance as a video recapped how she became champion again.

1. AJ Lee vs. Cameron. The ref called for the bell, but Cameron told them to hold up while she put on lip gloss. She used the moment to attack AJ. She smeared makeup all over AJ and Cole mocked JBL for wearing makeup. Cameron slapped AJ and AJ acted crazy. She started her comeback and skipped around the ring with Cameron's hair in her hands. Cameron escaped and started to leave, but Naomi ran out and rolled Cameron back in the ring. AJ hit the shining wizard for the win…

AJ Lee defeated Cameron at 3:11.

Backstage, Renee Young asked Randy Orton about Kane saying he was starting to hate him. Orton said he didn’t care what Kane said as long as Kane did what was best for business and that was make sure Orton leaves as champion at Battleground. He said tonight he faced a veteran in Chris Jericho that some people considered a legend. He said that meant it was time to introduce Jericho to the Legend Killer…[C]

Shore's Slant: That was an OK match that covered for Cameron's green well. I just wish the announce team would have taken it more serious. Orton's promo strained credibility. Jericho is a veteran who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame one day, but a legend? My thoughts on Jericho are well established but even I wouldn’t call him a legend. I get it was to get to get to the legend killer gimmick, but they should have skipped it.

Fandango made his ring entrance with Layla. Adam Rose made his entrance and Summer Rae tagged along…

[Q3] 2. Fandango (w/Layla) vs. Adam Rose (w/Summer Rae…kind of). They locked up and Rose slapped Fandango on the ass. Summer attacked Layla and Fandango came to the floor to split them up. Somebody stiffed him in the nose as the ref counted him out…

Adam Rose defeated Fandango by countout at 1:05.

Post-match, Fandango tried to hit Rose, but Rose ducked and hit the party foul… A video showed the interaction between Wyatt and Jericho from Raw. Jericho put over his match with Wyatt and called Bray a big, black, dark spider that consumes everything in its path. He said Wyatt yelled for Jericho to save him. Jericho said he couldn't save Wyatt, he was too far-gone. Jericho switched to putting over Orton and said he would crush the head of the serpent and squash the spider at Battleground. He said, "I'm coming" and acted like he blew out a lantern…[C]

Shore's Slant: Jericho gave the same spider line on Main Event so this felt dated. They filmed it the same night so I can see why, but still. How much longer are we going to get this feud with Summer Rae and Layla?

Cole announced Summer Rae vs. Layla with Fandango as ref again for later… Titus O'Neal and Heath Slater stood in the ring and Cole said they both said they had "dropped their inferior partners." The Usos made their full entrance…

3. The Usos vs. Heath Slater and Titus O'Neal. One Uso superkicked Slater as Slater jumped off the top rope, and the other hit a splash for the win…

The Usos vs. Heath Slater and Titus O'Neal.

Byron Saxton interviewed the Usos mid-ring about their two-out-three falls title match with the Wyatt Family. One of the Usos acted like a play-by-play guy and talked through a cheesy 15 second match of the two teams wrestling. He finished with "Down goes the Wyatts" as the other Uso ran around… Orton and Jericho were shown backstage…

Shore's Slant Cheesy promo but slightly charming too. It's going to work to varying degrees for everyone. I don't think it really hypes their match, though.

[Q4][C] Jericho made his ring entrance. Bray Wyatt appeared on the Tron and yelled for Jericho to save them. He sang He's Got the Whole World and said something that I couldn't make out. They went away and Orton made his ring entrance…

4. Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton. Orton went to the floor quickly and Jericho hit his springboard dropkick…[C]

[Q5] Jericho charged at Orton and Orton moved so Jericho crashed to the floor. Orton worked Jericho over on the floor. Back in the ring, Cole and JBL put over the network and the addition of Saturday Night's Main Event. Jericho ran his comeback and tried to hook the Walls of Jericho. Orton escaped and hit his powerslam for two.

Orton setup for the hung DDT, but Jericho slipped out and hooked the Walls. Orton made the ropes to break the hold. Orton ended up hitting the hung DDT and setup for the RKO. Jericho pushed away and hit a Lionsault off of Orton's crash. The Wyatt sounder hit and the lights went off. When they came back on, Jericho looked around but no one was there. Orton hit a RKO off the distraction for the win…[C]

Randy Orton defeated Chris Jericho at 14:00.

Shore's Slant: Entertaining match, but nothing spectacular. It was about the minimum you would expect from two guys with their credentials. Which is not to say it was bad. Again, look at their credentials. I did think they should protect Jericho here and I'm glad to see they did. He needs to look strong going into the PPV with Wyatt as he is expected to put Bray over and you need a reason to invest in that match.

[Q6] A video recapped the Summer vs. Layla match from Money in the Bank. Layla was in the ring with Fandango in a ref outfit. Summer Rae made her entrance. Each of them tried to seduce Fandango. He called for the bell, but stopped both women from attacking the other so he could dance. They watched for a moment and then attacked him. They put the boots to him and he finally fled to the ramp. His music played and each woman danced. Summer held out her hand to Layla to dance and the horny males in the audience started a "Yes" chant. Layla took her hand and the place erupted. They danced, complete with dips, while Fandango watched on…[C]

Shore's Slant: This is the moment to watch on this show. Not because the story was great (at least it's over!), but because the guys in the front row opposite the hard cam are a complete riot. They slowly figure out that the two women are about to dance together and come unglued. Hilarious.

Curtis Axel was in the ring with Ryback. Goldust's music hit and the place popped. He and Stardust made their entrance…

5. Curtis Axel (w/Ryback) vs. Goldust (w/Stardust). Stardust stood on the barricade and got the fans to cheer. Somebody called him a freak. He went over and laid on the announce table and stole JBL's hat. Goldust pinned Axel, but I missed the move and they offered no replay of that…

Goldust defeated Curtis Axel in 2:15.

Post-match, Ryback ran in and lifted Goldust for Shell Shock, but Stardust ran in and blew…well, star dust in Ryback's face. Ryback charged and Stardust pulled the ropes down to send Ryback to the floor. He and Goldust acted weird in the ring together…[C]

Shore's Slant: I don't know what else we can say about Stardust. He's doing everything he can, but every time I type his name it takes conscious effort to not type "Cody." I think people still think of him that way.

[Q7] Diego and El Torito made their ring entrance. A video recapped the Torito vs. Bo Dallas match from Raw. Dallas made his entrance and said he was in a handicap match but he was going to be handi-capable. He said Diego and his "bovine" friend didn't understand all the Bolievers were Bo's tag team partners…

6. Diego and El Torito vs. Bo Dallas in a handicap match. Diego started and Bo hit the Bo Dog out of nowhere for the win…

Bo Dallas defeated Diego and El Torito in 1:15.

Dallas dragged Torito in by his head and slammed him down. He acted concerned and stood Torito up only to hit the Bo Dog. He celebrated up the ramp…[C]

Shore's Slant: Not sure killing El Torito is the best way to get heel heat. I know I wouldn't boo him. Also, the I popped big for the handi-capable line. Good stuff.

[Q8] Rusev and Reigns made their ring entrances…

7. Rusev (w/Lana) vs. Roman Reigns. The match started as a brawl with Rusev going to the floor to regroup…[C] Rusev overpowered Reigns and pounded him to the ground. He hooked a nerve pinch rest hold that Reigns sold for barely a second before trying to come back. After several strikes, He went back to the nerve hold and Reigns sold it for a full second before starting his comeback. He setup for the spear and Randy Orton ran to the ring. He pulled Reigns's arm over the top rope to cause the DQ…

Roman Reigns defeated Rusev by disqualification at 9:50.

Post-match, Reigns hit a Superman punch on Orton, but Rusev slammed Reigns in the ring. Lana ordered him out of the ring and smiled at Orton. Orton climbed in the ring and hit an RKO. He smiled down at Reigns to end the show…

Shore's Slant: A very unimpressive match that was essentially a big brawl. I didn't expect a classic, but both guys looked very limited and did themselves no favor. The crowd was hot for Reigns on the whole, but this was too high profile of a spot for Rusev right now. He just doesn't come across as a main eventer, yet. I'll have more tomorrow in the Hit List and All Access audio review. Thanks for watching long tonight.
