6/17 Powell's WWE Main Event Live review: The Wyatt Family vs. Sheamus and The Uso Brothers
2014-06-17 19:00:10

By Jason Powell

WWE Main Event Live on WWE Network
Columbus, Ohio at Nationwide Arena

Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton checked in on commentary... Seth Rollins made his entrance for a promo to a minimal reaction. Once in the ring, Rollins looked at the crowd and soaked up a small "you sold out" chant. He told the fans that they don't even know what he had to say.

Rollins said he was there to congratulate his former business partner Roman Reigns. Rollins said Reigns outfoxed Vickie Guerrero and then won the battle royal to earn a spot in the Money in the Bank match. "My hat's off to you, Roman, enjoy this small victory," he said. Rollins noted that Reigns crossed The Authority and there would be repercussions on Monday's Raw.

Rollins said Reigns can't be cool and calm to get out of this one. Rollins said the real Reigns is a volcano. He said fans should be awake at night because they have to walk the same streets as him. Rollins said he's the only person who knows how to control and manipulate Reigns and Dean Ambrose. Rollins said that Dean Ambrose is a "babbling buffon" without him. Footage aired on the big screen of Rollins turning on his former teammates, which he said was a sign that he's still in control.

Rollins announced that there will be a second Money in the Bank match with the traditional briefcase/contract on the line. Rollins named himself the first entrant in the match. Seth Rollins came out wearing a white wife-beater t-shirt and jeans. He told Rollins he didn't need to worry about surviving MITB, he needed to worry about surviving the next ten minutes.

Ambrose attacked Rollins in the ring. Kane's music hit and it distracted Ambrose long enough for Rollins to take control. Kane came out, but Ambrose knocked him off the apron and threw Rollins at him. Ambrose escaped the ring and smirked as he backed up the stage while looking at Rollins and Kane... The announcers hyped the main event... [C]

Powell's POV: A good opening segment. Rollins does a better job of putting over the characters of Reigns and Ambrose than his own at this point. He's established that Ambrose is madman and now the description he gives for Reigns is good as well. The second MITB match could be entertaining, but the concern is whether WWE will have enough depth to fill out the rest of the card. I think they will since they already have the tag title match, plus they can also have a Divas' Title match, perhaps a Rusev squash, etc.

Rusev and Lana stood in the ring for a promo. Lana flashed the new Mount Rushmore that she debuted on Raw. She ran through the names of the Russian men on the monument, then shifted the focus to Vladimir Putin and said he would lead the United States in addition to Russia. She said Rusev would dominate his opponent. Rusev spoke briefly...

1. Rusev (w/Lana) vs. Santino Marella. Rusev caught Santino with a big kick early that drew gasps from the crowd. Rusev applied The Accolade for the quick submission win...

Rusev defeated Santino Marella in 0:25.

Powell's POV: Okay, so they would need Rusev to go longer if they want him to fill any MITB pay-per-view time. A total squash. Rusev actually said "resistance is futile" during his brief promo, which was pretty sappy.

The broadcast team spoke briefly about the Money in the Bank match for the World Heavyweight Championship... The Wyatt Family sounder played. Backstage, Luke Harper said he sees and hears things that aren't there. He said the only way to make them go away is to make them feel like he does. Bray Wyatt spoke as Erick Rowan stood in the background. Wyatt said Sheamus and The Uso's are pawns who will fall. Wyatt said his trio will stand tall at Money in the Bank... [C]

2. Divas Champion Paige vs. Naomi (w/Cameron) in a non-title match. Naomi applied a surfboard-like move where she wrenched the arms of Paige back, then twisted into a pin attempt for a two count. There was an awkward collision moments later. Naomi hit a cross body block that Paige rolled through for a good near fall at 5:00.

Paige went for the Paige Turner, but Naomi dodged it and performed her finisher and scored the clean win. Cameron screamed in an over the top celebration afterward. Paige and Naomi were about to shake hands when Cameron shoved Paige. Paige roughed up Cameron and then threw her out of the ring while Naomi just stood by and watched. Paige offered her hand again and Naomi accepted with a quick slap... [C]

Naomi pinned Paige in a non-title match in 5:20.

Powell's POV: A good match aside from the collision. I'm all for Cameron and Naomi splitting up since Naomi can go in the ring, whereas Cameron is more of a Total Divas personality. Cameron did act a bit heelish, but not enough to have Naomi just stand there while she got her ass kicked, so that was a bit odd. I am really down on the way WWE is using Paige, though I am hopeful that this match leads to a title match between Paige and Naomi at the pay-per-view.

The broadcast team set up footage from Raw of the MITB qualifiers... The main event of Smackdown will be Bray Wyatt, Cesaro, Randy Orton, and Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena, Roman Reigns, and Sheamus in a handicap match...

Backstage, Renee Young interviewed Sheamus and The Uso Brothers. They all hyped the six-man tag, then wrapped it up with "U-so" and "Brogue" chants... The Wyatt Family's custom to the city entrance video was shown and then they made their entrance... [C] The babyface trio made their entrances...

3. Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, and Erick Rowan vs. Sheamus and The Uso Brothers. After some throwaway action early, the show went to break with Rowan getting the better of one of the brothers. [C] After the break, Bray Wyatt hit Jey Uso with a clothesline at ringside and then rolled him back inside the ring.

Sheamus eventually took the hot tag and worked over Harper until he was clotheslined via the top rope. Sheamus came right back with a power slam and then set up for his finisher, but Rowan distracted him, leading to Rowan taking the ten forearms. Jimmy Uso tagged in and hit a cross body block on Harper for a two count. In the end, Wyatt tagged himself in unbeknownst to Jimmy. Wyatt hit Sister Abigail and pinned him clean...

The Wyatt Family defeated Sheamus and The Uso Brothers in 12:00.

Powell's POV: A good edition of Main Event. The six-man tag was solid and the right team went over given that Wyatt is in the title match at MITB, and Harper and Rowan are challenging for the tag titles. It should be interesting to see if they add more qualifiers to the new MITB match during tonight's Smackdown taping.
