5/6 Powell's WWE Main Event Live review: John Cena responds to Bray Wyatt
By Jason Powell
WWE Main Event Live on WWE Network
Buffalo, New York at First Niagara Center
After the opening video, the broadcast team of Tom Philips and Byron Saxton checked in and hyped John Cena's appearance...
1. Dolph Ziggler vs. Jack Swagger. Zeb Colter sat in on commentary. Footage was shown of Adam Rose's Raw debut. Colter vented about how Real Americans aren't rude. Ziggler threw a great dropkick early on. He also took a wild bump off the ring apron and down the ring steps. They cut to break with Ziggler selling on the floor. [C]
After the break, Ziggler was the aggressor until Swagger caught him in the Patriot Lock. Ziggler kicked him off and then hit the Fameasser as Swagger came off the ropes. Ziggler came up holding his left knee. "That's good!" Colter said of the knee injury. Funny. Ziggler came back moments later with a bit DDT.
Adam Rose's music played and the Rosebuds led him to the ring. Colter called them all a bunch of misfits and asked if they were Rocky Horror Picture Show leftovers. Rose led his group to Zeb and then laid down on the broadcast table while Zeb begged off. Rose stood up on the table with the house mic and said, "Jackie Boy, it's party time, all the time. Don't be a lemon, be a rosebud." Ziggler capitalized on the distraction by catching Swagger with the Zig Zag for the win.
Dolph Ziggler beat Jack Swagger in 10:45.
After the match, Rose asked Ziggler if he knows what comes with being a Rosebud. "Everything, Dolph," Rose said. Dolph joined in on the dancing as Rose led a train inside the ring... The broadcast team hyped Cena's appearance... [C]
Powell's POV: For a second there I thought they had already decided to turn Rose since he made his entrance at a point when Ziggler had taken control of the match. The best part of the segment was Colter on commentary. Rose's act isn't clicking with me yet on the big stage, but I haven't soured on it either.
2. Tamina, Alicia Fox, and Aksana vs. Natalya, Naomi, and Cameron. Total Divas footage was shown before the match. Natalya caught a seated Fox with a dropkick and went for the Sharpshooter early, but Fox reached the ropes. The broadcast team noted that Triple H will name the first challenger for U.S. Champion Sheamus during his weekly interview with Michael Cole on the WWE website on Wednesday. Late in the match, Naomi checked in and performed her signature spots and ended up pinning Aksana. After the match, Natalya and Cameron jawed at one another...
Natalya, Cameron, and Naomi beat Tamina, Alicia Fox, and Aksana in 5:25.
Powell's POV: The post match bickering was due to the Total Divas episode that just aired. Something about Cameron losing Natalya's cat while she was watching it only to find it again.
The Mr. T Mother's Day video aired... The broadcast team teased a recap of Kane and Daniel Bryan from Raw after the break... The most watched network shows graphic was shown... The broadcast team set up a recap video of the Kane and Bryan segment from Raw... Goldust made his entrance for a match against Curtis Axel... [C]
3. Goldust (w/Cody Rhodes) vs. Curtis Axel (w/Ryback). At 3:10, Axel threw a dropkick that caught Goldust on the chest. "That's why I'm better than perfect," Axel yelled. Goldust came back with his big uppercut punch and threw ten more in the corner as the fans counted along. Goldust performed the quick powerslam for a two count. Goldust won clean with The Final Cut... [C]
Goldust defeated Curtis Axel in 6:05.
Powell's POV: It was a pretty straight forward match in that there were no issues with Goldust and Cody. They did a nice tease at one point where Cody ran toward Goldust on the floor and performed his Disaster Kick. Goldust ducked out of the way and the kick caught Ryback.
John Cena made his entrance. He looked into the camera on the stage and said, "This is Main Event and this is the WWE Network." Footage of the demon boy finish of the cage match at Extreme Rules was shown. Cena said he has to let go of the fans who have decided to listen to Bray Wyatt's message.
Cena sang the "whole world in his hands" song and said it's catchy. He questioned whether fans have listened to the words and know where it comes from. He noted that Wyatt expects his followers to wear sheep masks. Cena set up footage from Raw of Wyatt dubbing himself a God.
"My name is John Cena, I am not a god, I am a man" said a fired up Cena. He said he believes in respect and hard work. He said no matter how tough the odds, you never give up. He said he was raised to fight for what he believes in. He said the competition may change, his t-shirt may change, and the WWE Universe may change, but his message does not - you never give up.
"My name is John Cena, this is my message, this is what I believe in," Cena said while holding up a green "Never Give Up" towel...
Powell's POV: Just in case you didn't know, his name is John Cena. I groan a little when he says that once in a promo, but I really roll my eyes when he says it twice. That said, it was an inspired fan rallying promo. Cena didn't really give an explanation for being afraid of demon boy and instead shifted the focus to his positive message against Wyatt deeming himself to be a god.
